Navigating First Car Purchase: A Family’s Off-Road Adventure
Recently, our daughter was in the market to purchase her first car. Naturally, our family discussions centred around her preferences and a reasonable budget. Given our keenness for off-road adventures and camping, it wasn’t surprising when she expressed interest in a four-wheel drive.
The challenge was finding a vehicle that balanced budget constraints with the essential features of a basic off-road car. We explored various options, from large wagons to dual cab utes, considering her driving experience in our Y62 Patrol and her need for something smaller yet spacious enough for friends and luggage. Eventually, we narrowed it down to either a mid-size wagon or a decent dual cab ute.
After careful saving and searching, we discovered a gem: a 1995 NJ Pajero V6. This model, while older, offers the simplicity and affordability crucial for a first-time owner. We ensured its roadworthiness by replacing suspension bushings, engine mounts, and giving it a thorough service. Fortunately, the previous owner had meticulously maintained key engine and driveline components, including recently replaced spark plugs and brakes.
Our purchasing process was somewhat unconventional. We bought the car based solely on photos and the seller’s description, without a physical inspection in South East Queensland. This approach can be risky, but conducting online PPSR checks helped us verify the vehicle’s history and legitimacy. Our first encounter with the car was when it was driven from the Sunshine Coast to Rockhampton, a journey it completed without a hitch.
Would I recommend buying a car without seeing it first? It’s a gamble. Ideally, one should inspect and test-drive a vehicle before purchasing. However, we were prepared for potential repairs or even reselling the car if necessary. Negotiating with a seller is an acquired skill, crucial for getting the best deal.
Purchasing your first car shouldn’t strain your budget or compel you to buy new. It’s important to find a vehicle suitable for a learner driver and to anticipate minor mishaps. As for us, we eagerly anticipate many more off-road adventures with our daughter.
