From ute to workshop
It is Small Business Month and this is a great time to reflect on what the journey has been like for Johnson’s 4WD. Owning and operating Johnson’s 4WD, and before that Johnson’s Mobile Mechanical, has been one of the biggest learning experiences of our lives. When we started in 2015, we made the decision to take our trusty Nissan ute out to customers and complete servicing, diagnosis and repairs in their driveways. That simple idea set us up for one of the most rewarding rollercoaster rides you could ever buy a ticket for.
Fast forward to today and Johnson’s 4WD is a locally owned and operated small business. We employ seven people and provide servicing, repairs and performance upgrades to customers across Central Queensland. Every member of our team is a 4WD enthusiast. Building this team has taken time and care. Through interviews and observed performance, we have selected people who treat every vehicle as if it were their own.
One of the most humbling parts of running this business is the feedback we receive. Customers tell their friends and family that they trust us with their vehicles and that we are friendly and honest. That trust has also led to nominations and recognition in small business awards and the Queensland Training Awards.
We are proud to share some of our achievements:
* 2018 – Winner Wheel, Auto and Marine Category, Best in Business Awards
* 2018 – Winner Best in Business Overall
* 2022 – Finalist, Central Queensland Region Small Employer of the Year, Queensland Training Awards
* 2023 – Finalist, Nyree Johnson Best Business Owner or Manager, Best in Business Awards
* 2023 – Winner Best in Business Overall
* 2024 – Winner Central Queensland Region Small Employer of the Year
These achievements reflect our dedication to our business, our team and our community. Without the trust and support of our customers, we could not do what we do. We thank everyone who has contributed to our growth. Take a moment this May, during Small Business Month, to applaud the small businesses you support.
The weather has finally shifted, and it is now a little more comfortable to get out and explore, camp and 4WD around this great part of the world. Whether you are planning a quick trip up the beach for a surf or fish, or a weekend away to reset, it is important to make sure your vehicle is prepared. A little preparation can be the difference between a great adventure and being stuck on the tracks or on the side of the road waiting for a mate.
Let’s look at the simple checks. They are only a small part of overall vehicle maintenance, but they can make a big difference.
• Check your tyres. Look at tread depth, cracks in the tread and sidewalls, and whether the tread pattern suits where you are heading. Check your pressures and make sure you have the right deflation and inflation equipment.
• Check your engine oil. Use the dipstick and make sure the level is between minimum and maximum. Check your service sticker or logbook to see if you are due for a service.
• Check your coolant level in the header tank or overflow bottle. It should sit between the minimum and maximum lines. Coolant should look colourful, not like river water. Avoid removing the pressure cap. A simple line of sight is enough.
• Check your lights. Consider whether you need better lighting for evening or night driving.
• Check your recovery gear. Replace anything with tears or loose stitching.
• Check your devices. UHF radios and mapping software often need updates. Do this before you leave while you have good Wi-Fi or mobile data.
These are basic inspections, but if you are unsure or want confidence that your vehicle is trip ready, speak with your mechanic.
Whatever you are planning, have a safe trip and enjoy yourself. Remember to tread lightly and take home what you take in. Leaving tracks and campsites clean ensures future adventurers can enjoy the same experiences we have today.
