Weathering the Restoration: How Seasonal Changes Impact Project Car Progress
Who’d have thought the weather would impact the timing of project car progress? This time of year around our region means we start to see a lot of movement in vehicle restorations. The cooler weather now that summer is behind us makes it more bearable to work in the shed, and in some cases, for locals, it means getting their car ready for RockyNats03.
Nathan played a computer game on the family’s 1980 IBM PC as a child. This PC had monochrome graphics, a 5 ¼“ floppy disc and a favourite family game, Test Drive. Test Drive allowed a person to simulate driving a Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus and a few other elite vehicles, which, as a child, seemed like pipe dreams ever to experience. It wasn’t until Nathan, and his family went on a holiday to Brisbane and the Gold Coast that he started to see these supercars up close.
If you’re partial to appreciating automotive excellence and you see these cars up close, often at that first moment, you start to get an appreciation for them and an understanding to keep an open mind about different makes and models.
Growing up in a Ford family, there was always good banter amongst friends and family in the Johnson home when a Holden entered the invisible arena. The good old Aussie red vs blue argument.
When Nathan’s Dad, Ian, took the family to local car shows in the 80s and 90s, it demonstrated respect for all makes and models. In today’s world, the cycle is repeated, with son Alan (13 years) now experiencing the same opportunities. While he is partial to Nissan over Toyota and Ford over Holden, the appreciation and admiration for quality and classics are underpinned.
For those passionate about building, restoring, or keeping a car in its original condition, while the expenses are high, the pride is too. Before the 1990s, technology was simple, and you were lucky to have ABS or even an airbag for safety. In 20 to 30 years, a 2018 Mustang GT should have the same sentimental value as its predecessor.
When searching for your pride and joy, finding these hidden gems can be tedious and knowing what you want and are willing to pay is, of course, the first step. Consideration needs to be given to the vehicle’s location and whether importing is required, as well as what type of registration the car will need, including what purpose the vehicle will be driven for. Other factors may include parts availability and specialist trades required to complete or aid in the completion of the project.
Finding like-minded people to enjoy the shared appreciation for automotive excellence can be found by joining your local or state car clubs. Word of mouth is strong, and a solid recommendation from a trusted fellow enthusiast goes far. Sometimes these clubs can put you in touch with critical suppliers you may need for your project.
Being part of an enthusiast club also ensures you’re not alone on your project, and it has the bonus of fostering an environment where lifelong friendships are made.
